At this point, it is important to emphasize the futility of the bacteriological examination of great numbers or all of the population (a method which has been suggested). In the first place even in the hands of skilled workers, many my escape detection: the techinque of bacteriological examination

is very difficult. Secondly, if the same number of the popula- tion is infected, as I have detected at the gaol, what disposi-

tion could be made of the hundred thousand or more individuals

which would be classed as carriera ? Thirdly, cases only very

rarely develope amongst isolated carriers (as in the onse of

the guol). Fourthly an attempt has been made to show that other

factors, as the dense overcrowding of the population is more

important in the wide-spread dissemination of the disease then

the presence of numerous healthy carriers.

Hence in the present state of our knowledge the detection of the contact carriers, especially the dangerous carrier, azd the elamination of their influence, should suffice.

there is usually heavy migration of the population the problem

of limiting the spread of the disease to distant areas become Y

The number of cases which have recently occurred among

exceptions been localixed to the steerage passengers. Uwing to

heavy traffic and limited steamship space, there has been a

tendancy to overcrowd the passengers.
